WRITING OPPORTUNITIES

 

Creative Writing Workshop - Scripts, Characters, Plots!

Sunday 18 March- Keo’s, Braunstone Gate, Leicester & Sunday 25th March – Venue tbc. Both workshops run from 12noon-5pm. Develop traditional script, character, plot, contemporary text, narrative and prose. Explore different stimulus, and develop skills for editing and re-writing. The classes are a collection of tasks and exercises to spark ideas, stir the imagination and get the creative juices flowing! You will also gain pointers for getting some of your writing seen. Decibel New Prize

Penguin Books and decibel, Arts Council England are inviting writers to submit non-fiction personal accounts of the experience of immigration to the UK for this competition. The winning authors will see their stories published in a Penguin anthology.  Competition entries must be; between 1000 and 5000 words in length, non-fiction personal accounts of the experience of immigration to the UK, and aimed at an adult readership. There is no age limit for authors, who must not have had a full-length book published. The closing date for entries is Monday 2 April, and the successful authors will be announced in early June. Emergency Showcase – Performance Slot Available

There is still one slot available for performing Artists of any discipline at Speakeasy Theatre's 'Emergency' showcase at the Y Theatre, Leicester on Thursday 29 March. Raising the Standards of Youth Dance

Dance And Disability: Strategies For Inclusion In Higher Education & Beyond

Saturday March 24, 9.30am – 5.15pm, Coventry University. This one-day Networking Conference will be of interest to dance teachers in higher education, professional practitioners, students and all those who have an interest in dance and disability or integrated environments. Leading teachers, dancers and choreographers will give presentations, including live and recorded performance events, and there will also be plenty of time for discussion. Fees range from £25 - £90. Independent Dance is keen to encourage the participation of artists in the conference and is able to offer a few artists financial support towards expenses. Uppingham Theatre Performing Arts Platform

Uppingham Theatre is offering slots for local musicians, dancers and theatre practitioners to perform in a new strand of Platform performances. The Platform will showcase the work of semi-professional performers from Rutland/Leicestershire and is part of the Oakham/Uppingham Festival taking place at the end of June/beginning of July. Key Stage 2 Music Continuing Professional Development Programme

Creating a Scene: Discussion panel

Saturday 17 March, 1.30 – 3pm, Angel Row Gallery, Nottingham. Creating a Scene aims to ignite a discussion around the pros and cons of establishing an artistic practice away from our metropolitan capital. The event will highlight the support structures which exist (or may not exist) for artists currently working in the regions.  A panel of guest speakers will talk about their experiences of working collaboratively with other artist-led organisations, public venues, funding bodies and other cultural institutions in order to sustain a visual arts scene, build national & international networks, create an audience and establish an arts market.  A transcript of this event will be featured in the Parade publication which will be launched in May 2007. Wed 18 April, 10am - 6pm, Nottingham, free - Booking essential. An Angel Row Gallery / Accelerator event. You've made your work and now you need to take it out into the world and make it public.  How do you translate your practice into a gallery exhibition? What do you need and who can help you? Emerging artists are offered the opportunity to meet with gallery curators and technical staff to receive individual tailored advice. Surgeries are 45-minute sessions which must be booked in advance. Public Art Evaluation Toolkit Workshops

Wednesday 23 May, Birmingham. In response to Government’s evidence-based approach to the development and implementation of policy, ixia and OPENspace at Edinburgh College of Art and Heriot-Watt University have designed a toolkit for evaluating the impact of public art. Intended for use by all stakeholders in a public art commission, the overall aim is to increase mutual awareness of diverse agendas and desired outcomes of a public art commission. Two tools have been developed: the matrix and personal project analysis. The Bigger Picture Announces International Call For Major Public Realm Commissions

The Bigger Picture exhibits artists’ film & video and interactive / participatory screen based projects on Big Screen Manchester. Utilising this unique screening space, The Bigger Picture is able to present a host of artists’ works to large and diverse audiences reaching beyond the traditional gallery context. Proposals are invited for the production of exceptional new public realm works to be launched on Big Screen Manchester at the time of the Urban Screens Conference Manchester 07 (11&12 October), and to tour to partner city Big Screens and public sites throughout 2007/8. Four new works will be commissioned, each with an attached fee of £5000 based on an agreed budget, of up to £10,000 for production. This is a significant opportunity for film, video, new media and cross-disciplinary artists to explore new ways of creating and exhibiting work for a public context. Partnerships for Community Engagement & Participation

Monday 12 March, De Montfort Hall, Leicester. A conference to commemorate the Bicentenary of the abolition of the slave trade. It will cover such topics as mainstreaming BME arts, culture and heritage; engaging and building partnerships with BME communities to enable access and inclusion; and how the role of voluntary BME groups in projects enables community cohesion. Signpost is ATC’s programme of free advice surgeries for people in the arts, heritage and creative sectors. The Arts Award is the first award scheme to recognise the development of young artists and young arts leaders. The Arts Award celebrates the creative progress made by young people and not just their artistic skill.
